22 Short Peer Stories

Our Story
We’ve been working on something truly special—a project that brings the voices of the peer workforce to the forefront. Through the Most Significant Change storytelling project, we’ve captured the real, lived impact of peer support in a way that goes beyond numbers and data.
This project is about more than collecting stories—it’s about honouring the people who make peer support happen every day. We wanted to understand how peer support changes lives, not just from the outside looking in, but through the voices of those at the heart of it. We wanted to shine a light on the powerful, sometimes unexpected ways that peer support makes a difference—both for those delivering it and for those receiving it.
We asked a simple but meaningful question: What’s the most significant change you’ve experienced through delivering peer support?
The answers came through stories—honest, hopeful, raw, and sometimes tough to tell. They reflect transformation, courage, humour, setbacks, and resilience. Each story offers a glimpse into the human side of recovery—what it really feels like to connect, to be seen, and to find your place within a community that truly understands.
We gathered 22 stories from peer workers in both paid and voluntary roles, across a range of community and service settings in Cardiff and the Vale. Each story is unique, but together they show the power of lived experience, the importance of peer connection, and why it matters to protect and nurture this vital kind of support.
These stories are not the final word, but a starting point for deeper understanding and reflection. We hope they inspire you as much as they’ve inspired us.
Thank you to everyone who shared their story and to all the organisations that supported this project. Your voices matter.
Also, special thanks to the Cardiff and Vale Area Planning Board for making this project possible.
